You wander around a quiet village where many artisans can be found. As you walk along the cobblestone floors, a waft of freshly baked bread allures you to find a little bakery called, “A Baker’s Tail”. Upon entering the humble establishment, you can find the place decorated with paw print wallpaper, catlike porcelain, and shelves that seem bare of any goodies. However, a calico tabaxi greets you warmly with a smile as he kneads some bread, “Oh customers! Welcome! You’re my first for the day!”

The tabaxi behind A Baker’s Tail is called Powdered Sugar or Sugar for short. He’s a newcomer to the village who dreams of sharing his family’s recipes for everyone to enjoy. He’s skilled in his craft. However, villagers know when he’s stressed or worried whenever he is found kneading dough. The players are prompted to roll a DC10 Insight Check on the tabaxi baker to see how he may truly be feeling.

Despite the warmth of his smile, you can see a bit of sadness in his eyes. He notices your stares and looks up, “Oh sorry! Is there anything you need? I have a great selection of treats! Baked just this morning!” He pulls away from profusely kneading his dough and heads up to present to you a tray with three assorted baked goods, “Sorry it isn’t much today. But everything was made handmade with love! Here, have a free sample.”

Three Assorted Baked Goods

Any player may roll a DC15 Arcana or Investigation Check to learn more about the assorted baked goods that he offers. But he is more than willing to share more about them if the player simply asks.

  • Goodberry Pie
Just as good as grandma’s! A slice of this sweet yet tart Goodberry Pie restores 10 hit points and provides enough nourishment to sustain you for one day.
  • Animal Crackers
Coming in all shapes and sizes, Animal Crackers mimic the sound of the creature that they are shaped into. A piece gives advantage on Survival Checks when tracking a beast.
  • Drunken Bread
The best hangover treat there is! When a piece is consumed, Drunken Bread cures the effects of the poisoned and drunk condition.

The samples do not have any of the effects since it is not worth one serving size.

As you enjoy Sugar’s confections, he notices that you are foreign to the village. “I see you seem to be adventurers. I had quite an adventure myself coming here and starting my life here,” he smiles and leans over to look at the door. He lets out a little sigh as his hands wander to busy themselves with something, “But as you see it’s been a bit of a struggle. I’ve been having trouble with my supplier as of late with getting ingredients…”

Sugar asks the players to help him to get to the bottom of why his supplier hasn’t been shipping his ingredients as of late. He offers a reward upon the completion of the task. If the players accept, he will then give the players the address of the supplier’s office. The players must succeed in a DC10 Survival Check to find the office.

Upon entering the office, you find an elderly gnome who seems to be the supplier Sugar has described. As he catches a glance at you, his eyes widen. He quickly gets up and heads over to you, pressing for you to leave. Before you know it, a soft feminine voice can be heard behind you, “Is there something wrong?”.

A petite, young lady wearing an apron approaches the supplier and the party. Players can roll a DC15 Investigation Check on the daughter or the office. If they succeed in investigating the young woman, the player will find out that she is the daughter of a notorious bandit captain. If they choose to investigate the office, they will find a bandit insignia and other items related to criminal activity. Players can also roll a DC10 Insight Check on the supplier, if they succeed, they’ll find something that seems to be scaring him.

The Bandit Group

The bandit group consists of eight members: one bandit captain, one bugbear, two bandits, and four thugs. The bandit captain has taken over the supply of the supplier’s business to support his daughter’s dream of being a baker. Because of this, it had prevented bakers connected to the supplier from accessing special and magical ingredients that the bandit captain’s daughter wants exclusivity to. Since the bandit takeover, bakers have lost business without their precious ingredients.

Player options

If the players choose violence, they will engage in combat against the bandit group extorting the supplier. The bugbear of the group has a surprise attack for the first round of combat. The bandits and thugs will then follow. While the bandit captain will be the last obstacle to be faced. The players can either kill or subdue the bandits. Either way the supplier will be able to return to business and supply ingredients once more.

The players also have the option to take a nonviolent route. If the players can negotiate with the bandit captain’s daughter. The player must succeed in a DC20 Persuasion Check, the DC may be lowered depending on the player’s reasoning. Succession in this results in a more fruitful business venture between the bandit captain’s daughter, the supplier, and Sugar.

Risks and Rewards

If the players manage to defeat the bandits in combat, they will be able to save the supplier’s and Sugar’s business and obtain loot: 50 GP, a tattered chain shirt, two tattered daggers, a bandit’s code (a password or symbol that allows entrance to certain circles), and a captain’s cloak (acts as a cloak, grants +1 to Persuasion checks towards Bandits). However, if they lose, the players risk their valuables.

If the players manage to have a successful negotiation with the bandit captain’s daughter, the daughter, the supplier, and Sugar will have a business venture together. But if they upset her, they risk getting into a fight with the bandit group.

Regardless of what route they choose, they save Sugar’s bakery. But if they can return successfully, Sugar will reward them 25 GP from his savings, two of each of the assorted cakes he offered prior, and discounts.
